BREW guide

Use this Brew Guide to get started with these simple but rewarding methods of brewing. You can keep things as simple as you like, but it gives you the opportunity to begin playing with different grinds and brew times as your confidence begins to build. This is just the basics for you to follow as you start out, but once you gain some experience feel free to experiment until you find your perfect cup.

V60 drip coffee maker

  1. If your brewing for two people, you will need around 36g of coffee to 500ml of water. Aim for a medium/coarse grind similar to the texture of table salt.

  2. Rinse the filter paper to remove any papery taste from affecting the taste of your coffee.

  3. Add the ground coffee and shake lightly to level the coffee

  4. Start the first pour. The aim here is to saturate the grounds, this should only require 80-100ml of the total water. Watch as the coffee expands and degasses. This process is the coffee blooming. Wait 20-30 seconds before moving on to the main pour.

  5. Try to ensure that you are pouring fairly consistently, at a steady rate. Aim to pour in a circular motion that keeps the coffee grounds fully immersed without drowning the coffee with all the water at once. Pause every 100ml for a few seconds. Ideally, the total brew time (including bloom) should be roughly 4-5 minutes. Any longer and the grind may need to be more coarse.

  6. All there is to do now is serve the coffee and enjoy.

French press / cafetiere

  1. If your brewing for two people, you will need around 36g of coffee to 500ml of water. Aim for a medium/coarse grind, too fine and the grounds may pass through the filter, yet too coarse and they could block the filter.

  2. Add the ground coffee into the french press/cafetiere.

  3. Pour in the water to roughly half way up the french press, this allows the coffee to bloom. Now leave for 1 min.

  4. Pour the rest of the water into the french press and leave for a further 3 min. Pop the plunger on and press it down to just above the water.

  5. After the 3 min has passed, press the plunger down exerting steady pressure. You shouldn’t feel too much resistance.

  6. Once you have finished plunging you are now ready to serve and enjoy your coffee.

Tip - Be sure to decant the coffee straight away, it will limit the amount of fines or sludge in your cup, and reduce over-extraction.

Aerobie Aeropress

  1. The Aeropress fits 240ml of water, so you will want to use around 18g of medium-fine ground coffee.

  2. Dampen the filter to remove any papery taste from affecting the taste of your coffee.

  3. We recommend putting both the chamber and plunger together and standing them upside down (this is known as the inverted method).

  4. Place the ground coffee into the top chamber so its sitting on the rubber plunger.

  5. Add the water on top and stir for 30 seconds.

  6. After 2 mins total brew time, place the black cap on with the rinsed filter inside, turn the Aeropress the correct way up on to the top of your mug/cup, and slowly plunge for 30 seconds.

  7. Make sure you remove the extracted coffee and clean the Aeropress straightaway, this will make life easier next time you come to make a coffee.

  8. Serve and enjoy
